This might be a question for the newbie group, but I'd like to hear
from the more experienced 'boxers on this subject.
We all know you need a personal stamp, an ink pad, a compass
and a journal to letterbox. But what else do you take with you
when you go after a new box?
What other items do you have in your kit that you have found
unexpectedly useful?
Is there something you carry on the hunt that you just couldn't live
without?
I'm curious.

Hi Natty Bumpo:
Sue and I have a flashlight, bugspray, old towel, extra baggies/pens/zip
lock bags for quick repairs, camera, binoculars, first aid kit, kleenex,
tape measure, whistle, mirror, cell phone w/GPS, a letterbox or 2 to
plant if the spirit moves us, paper for clues and that's about it. Guess
who carries the backpack?!!?
Have fun and just get out there & box!!!

SUNSCREEN, bandana, chocolate, matches & steel wool in an old film canister, water, ace bandage, pocketknife, kleenex for all its special purposes, 2" square wet sponge in a baggy for wiping stamps and scraped knees which can be colorful if you clean the stamp first and later damage one of your 250 body parts, letterbox repair kit, ink pad, pen, map, space blanket, gloves, cell phone, digital camera, benadryl, dry socks, extra blank carving media for trailside creative urges, sketchbook and six prismacolor pencils for capturing box locations in my art journal which I later stamp in if the sketch becomes a box subject, and LUNCH.
In southern Vermont I also carry Technu, a soaplike gel that washes off poison ivy oils before they really get a hold on your skin. This is a cleanser that was developed for washing radiation off people and is sold in some drug and sporting goods stores. It really works, we had 9 cub scouts come home from camp with NO poison ivy unlike most other units.
Oh, and I carry the pack......because it has the chocolate.
Happy trails,
Susan

My pack stays pretty much the same. Obviously my stamping stuff and clues.
Extra ink pad, paper towels, extra baggies, and baby wipes for box first aid. A
first aid kit for myself and family, space blanket, bug spray or lotion. Extra
pair of dry socks in a sealed baggie ( in case the stream crossing doesn't go
as planned), binoculars, 2 compass, emergency whistle, cell phone, trail mix,
2 water bottles, multi-tool, garbage bag for garbage picked up a I walk
trails, and usually a camera. I add a blaze orange vest during hunting season and
sweat shirt during colder weather.
Safe trails,
Koyote

This was a great question -- and now my backpack has gone from 5LB to
15LB! And I don't mean LetterBoxes.
Are the tick tweezers in the first aid kit?
And being the sweet darlin' that I am, also carry a compact umbrella
so I won't melt.

Two things that have not been mentioned that I have with me is toilet paper and pepper spray. I guess the Kleenex can replace the toilet paper, though. If I am traveling alone or just with my kids, I like knowing that if we encounter something or someone that makes us uncomfortable, I have the spray in my pack.

Someday, we'll plant that letterbox by Hogback Mountain...
Diane and I are pleased to take along assorted sized baggies and paper towels and a spare box to help out others with maintenance (In addition to the others supplies already mentioned). Helping others with maintenance greatly increses the longevity of the box contents - even if it's just wiping out a bit of condensation. I'm very grateful when someone gives me an update on a box we planted further away, and tells me they replaced a baggie or something.
Maybe we should include some pruning shears, so we can also clear away poison ivy (the Flea Plant, as some Quebecois say).

Clues. Can't go lboxing w/o them. But a must have is duct tape. You
can do a bunch of things with duct tape, especially in a jam. Makes a
great cover for blisters, believe it or not. More weird facts..did you
know a condom can hold a liter of water? Not my choice of containers,
but in a pinch. Learned that in a survival class.

Pretty much Deedle & I have what everyone else has mentioned in their kit. Water (which as I've said before is MY number one most important item), a flashlight, gloves, paper towels, baby wipes, extra sandwhich baggies, an empty plastic bag to throw my shoes in on the car ride home when we've tramped through a mud-soaked bridal trail, first aid kit (I'm a Red Cross volunteer, it's in my blood to have one of those), my cell phone always comes with us, I have pepper spray, too, on my key chain, so that comes by default since the keys usually are in the backpack, we've got a hanger because someone suggested it once for poking into holes, but so far we haven't needed it (we usually find a stick on the ground to use instead). And of course, our compass, our ink pad, our stamp, pens, our index cards (we use index cards for our letterboxing journal & store them in a photo album). We keep the compass, ink pad, stamp & cards in an old travel-sized Caboodles case I had as a teen, which
gives us a nice (dry) flat surface to stamp on. And a snack in the car so we've got nourishment waiting for us after the hike. Although I've gotten some really great ideas reading everyone else's lists. Maybe I need to have Deedle start carrying the backpack (which I hope to have an LbNA logo patch on in a month or two, so you'll recognize us on the trail).

My backpack isn't quite as heavy. Glad I added a flashlight last
weekend, because we got stuck in the woods after dark. Luckily, we
had marked another position and could use the GPS to get out of the
woods. I've also got a first aid kit(with tick tweezers), paper
towels, and a camera.
We share in the carrying of the backpack. We also "trash out" a
lot, so we've usually both got something to carry.

So I suppose that it would require finind a clean water source while
out in the woods, or you'd look pretty silly carrying around a
condom of water :) It is an interesting bit of information ;)

To the above, I have a compass, goodly length of rope, and self

That's a better alternative than what I've seen *some* people do for
blisters. Such as 'sewing' a small piece of thread through a
blister, then leaving it there. (It's supposed to help draw out the
excess fluids from the blister while hiking the trail.) One poor
person I saw had a dozen little pieces of thread perforating their
feet. It was just plain gross. Duct tape on blisters for thru-
hikers is quite common, however.
> More weird facts..did you know a condom can hold a liter of water?
This is a clean condom, I hope? Has anyone actually ever claimed
that a condom full of water ever saved their life? Because if not,
that seems like a strange suggestion for a 'survival' class. =)

Dear Me, It appears to her Ladyship that perhaps some have become
somewhat over zealous in persuit of one more F if they find it
nescessary to pack their kit with fire starting equipment and such.
Survival classes for letterboxing? Just with whom are you
letterboxing? A cellular phone should offer all the protection one
needs in a modern world. But really, her Ladyship must say that
anyone who's carrying around a backpack full of water filled condoms
is perhaps just a weensie bit too focused on their F and P-ness.

Although you do make a good point there Miss Prisspot, suffice it to say that I was taught to never go into the woods
without being prepared to survive should one become lost. And lord knows I can become lost far to easy. While I am
sure that most letterboxes don't take you deep into the woods where one can get lost, perhaps it is the nature of some
to want to be prepared? However, should you desire to not be prepared, by all means, enter the woods and have a
blast. (grin) I for one, while not worried out my F-n-P'ness at all, teach my children to be prepared and to be
respectful of Mother Nature. I'd rather have the supplies than not have them... As far the cell phone, I can name a
dozen or more hikes we were one whilst letterboxing, that the cell phone was a complete waste on. Unless you are in
the city, or along the highly travelled corridors of this great nation, most cell phones just don't work. Seems they
need that pesky little thing, a Signal, don't ya know? And, if you don't have a signal, in this modern world, and
you get lost, and you've not carried any supplies with you, whatever will one do?

I have to say that this has been a very interesting and enlightening
topic.
Up till now, we carry a letterbox (in case we find the perfect planting
spot), our log books, our stamps, a stamp pad, a pen and some paper (In
case I need to write clues for that extra box we may plant). Oh, and
don't forget the kids sippy cups! =]
Now, keep in mind, we do all hikes that are less than 2 miles and the
terrain has to be close to flat. But, should we ever decide to leave
the kids home and go for a more strenuous box, I now have some great
ideas as to what to pack =]

that I was taught to never go into the woods
without being prepared to survive should one become lost. And lord knows
I can become lost far to easy. While I am
sure that most letterboxes don't take you deep into the woods where one
can get lost, perhaps it is the nature of some
to want to be prepared? However, should you desire to not be prepared,
by all means, enter the woods and have a
blast. (grin) I for one, while not worried out my F-n-P'ness at all,
teach my children to be prepared and to be
respectful of Mother Nature. I'd rather have the supplies than not have
them... As far the cell phone, I can name a
dozen or more hikes we were one whilst letterboxing, that the cell phone
was a complete waste on. Unless you are in
the city, or along the highly travelled corridors of this great nation,
most cell phones just don't work. Seems they
need that pesky little thing, a Signal, don't ya know? And, if you
don't have a signal, in this modern world, and
you get lost, and you've not carried any supplies with you, whatever
will one do?

I have picked up several ideas too! I am making a list right now. I refuse to own a cell phone but never thought of a whistle! Lot's and lot's of good stuff here. Am writing as fast as it comes in!

I use a scrapbookers bag for my kit. I have my trail name and image on the
side of it. Inside I have the following:
My journal
Ballpoint pens
Sharpie Marker
Baby Wipes (both for stamps and knees, or wiping of bird poop)
Empty ziplocs of 4 different sizes. (For replacing bags in boxes)
My stamp and the kids stamps
Rubber gloves
Flashlight
Compass
Peanut Butter Crackers
Personal Traveler
Fold up umbrella.
I think the most useful thing so far has been the heavy duty rubber gloves.
Keeps hands clean when looking in all those wet, mossy, dirty, muddy, nettle
infested box hiding places!

When I remember, I take my hiking staff, which also gives me a place to
display my LbNA medallion. Just as well, since I still haven't gotten around to
sewing the patch onto my backpack. It would also allow me to whack anyone
might deserve it, though thankfully, so far, I haven't met anyone like that.

I always take my HIKING STAFF to poke in the brush or 'snakey' areaS
before walking in or grabbing anything with my hand. Here in South
Texas rattlesnakes are all too common. I also take a small GARDEN
FORK for raking back fallen leaves or gravel (as it turned out last
week) instead of doing it with my bare hands. I have BENEDRYL SPRAY
as well, which was a good thing last week, when I took hold of a
thorny bush to pull it aside to pass into a thicket, and got too
close to some kind of wasp. I take COLORED PENCILS too, to color in
my personal stamp when I have time. Other than those items...oh, and
a WHISTLE, I think everything else is pretty standard. Only last
week, I did have two SMALL DOLLS (the Barbie variety, only the age
11 year old characters, Stacy and Janet) to photograph posing in
front of 'touristy' signs and in various stages of finding a
letterbox. This was for a photo-story site and 'vacation doll'
project.
Busy Bee... yeah, I am goofy...

pack a primer on grammar; you conspicuously dangled a participle
